Innovation and Flexibility: Europoliuretani’s New Self-Releasing Polyurethane System

Recently, we faced a new challenge that led us to create an innovative self-releasing polyurethane system.
The Challenge: Improving Release Without External Agents
One of our customers asked us if it was possible to modify the high density polyurethane system in use to facilitate the release of the piece from the mold, without the constant need to apply waxes or release sprays.
Meeting this requirement would improve production efficiency, reducing time and operational costs.
The Research and Development Process
To achieve this goal, we initially analyzed different silicones and additives to integrate into the formulation.
After a series of laboratory tests, we identified some reactive products with potential, but with partial effectiveness and a concentration of use that was too high.
The collaboration with Evonik, a leader in the chemical products sector, has enabled the development of an innovative additive capable of bonding to the polymer matrix and migrating to the surface of the printed piece, thus achieving an internal release effect.
This balance has been achieved through a careful tuning of compatibility and incompatibility with the raw materials of the polyurethane system.
Field Tests: Concrete Results
Since it was difficult to accurately replicate the process in the laboratory, we decided to test the new system directly at the customer’s site.
We supplied an initial batch of 20 kg with the selected additive. After an initial application of the water-based release agent already in use by the customer, it was possible to carry out five consecutive moldings without the need to reapply it.
This led to a 60% reduction in the use of the release agent.
Subsequently, we conducted a large-scale test, supplying 400 kg of polyol formulation.
The feedback received confirmed the previous results: a reduction in the frequency of application of the external release agent by 50-60%, with the need to reapply it only before the sixth molding.
